If you have received a hurricane alert in your area and you need to evacuate your home, then what should you take along with you? Almost all the emergency preparedness experts say the same thing. The most important thing that you must take along with yourself while evacuating home after a hurricane alert is a 72 hour kit.

The 72 hour kit should include food, water, first aid supplies, tool box, sanitation supplies, communication devices, copies of important documents, cash and a method of warmth and shelter. The important documents whose copies should be included in a 72 hour kits are passports, insurance information, bank account details, property documents and birth certificate. These documents are important to begin life again after the emergency. Remember, never to keep the original documents in the emergency preparedness kit.

The items in a 72 hour kit vary as per the individual requirements and it also varies depending upon the age of members in a family. If there is an infant in your family, make sure not to forget taking his/her security blanket, clothes, diapers, baby-food, bottles, wipes, medicines and toys. If you buy a pre-assembled kit from the market, you should check it for all these items and include whatever is not included in the 72 hour kit you have bought. If your family has a person with old age, take some time to include medicines and any other specific requirement of that person depending upon his/her health.

If you are taking your pet along with you, remember to take their dishes and some food for the pet. Do not leave your pet back in the home just because you are more concerned about your own needs. Emergency rescue teams are usually not able to find the pets or save them. This can be heart-breaking for the child in you home. So, always try to take your pet along with you while evacuating home before hurricanes, unless it is completely unfeasible.

If you have some time to pack before the hurricane, remember to pack the most important thing that you cannot live without. Always carry all the cash in house, ATM cards and jewelry. This is required to survive once the items in the 72 hour kit are finished. Remember; never go overboard while packing things. Leave your house in time. Everything in this world is replaceable, except for the lost life. So, leave in time and leave safely. After all, nothing is more important than your safety!
