Choosing the right emergency food for storing in disaster kits is important not only to make your survival possible, but also to make it more comfortable. Usually, when we talk about emergency survival food, we think of canned food items and powered milk powder. While all these things are undoubtedly important part of survival food list, there is so much more that you can choose to store in your disaster kits.

Start your disaster preparation by making drinking water as your first priority. You should store one gallon of water per person per day (for at least three days) in your disaster kits. So, if you have a family of three people, this means you should store 10 gallons of water in total.

Next comes storing of foods. You can begin with stocking up canned foods, such as fruits, energy bars, vegetables. However, you need not necessarily stick to boring selection of high-calorie potatoes. Instead, you can choose from a variety of vegetables and even think of including food choices to satisfy your sweet tooth like peaches and pears. Also, do not forget to include meat items in your disaster kits. As eating veggies can grow tiresome quickly, you can store things like corned beef, beef stew, tune and even sun-roasted meat. These items may not be as nutritious as they would have been when fresh; still they can help your body stay nourished and active.

Eating stored food can sometimes become very difficult due to their bad and monotonous taste buds. Therefore, including some spices like salt, pepper, sugar and flour are important. Although these items are often not considered as necessary, they can work wonders for making your family more comfortable in terms of improving food’s taste. You can also include a small supply of cooking oil and a selection of condiments like tomato ketchup and mustard sauce. Do not keep things like mayonnaise that expires quickly in the absence of refrigeration.

If you have small kids in your family, milk is an important addition for disaster kits. Not only for drinking, but also for preparing cereals, you will need milk. You can buy milk that can be stored without refrigeration till it is open. You should also include a box of powdered milk, but that will mean increased usage of your already limited water supply.

Avoid including food items that will need too much of preparation before eating. If you do not get proper fire-supply, these food items will become unusable. Also, include food items considering the individual requirements of all the members in your family, such as kids, diabetic, and even pets.
